The primary purpose of health assessment fitness for work is to make sure that an individual is fit to perform the tasks involved effectively and without risk to their own or others’ health and safety.
It is not the intention to exclude a person from a job but to make any necessary reasonable modifications or adjustments to the job to allow the person to work efficiently and safely.
Privacy:
All health information disclosed in discussions will be held in strict confidence. Occupational Health employees are bound by a Confidentiality Agreement, requiring them to handle confidential information with the highest diligence and carefulness, considering applicable data protection laws and regulations. The medical information will be accessible only to the Occupational Health Specialist for the purposes of providing clearance. Confidential information will not be disclosed except as permitted or required by law or judicial process or by the data subject’s written consent.

Why do I need to complete a pre-employment exam?
Upon accepting a position with King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) you are required to complete the Pre-Employment Medical Questionnaire (PEMQ). The purpose of the PEMQ is to ensure, so far as is reasonably possible, that you are fit for work activities you will be undertaking in order to protect your own and other’s health and safety. The PEMQ will assist KAUST in creating and maintaining a safe working environment.

As needed, additional documentation to support illness, injury, health complaints. This information enables us to identify any support needs you may have and to ensure that, where appropriate, adjustments to your work or workplace can be put in place at the start of your employment.
Why does my new hire require a preemployment exam?
The exam determines an applicant's ability to perform a specific job; and provides a baseline medical status against which to evaluate any occupational illnesses or injuries that might arise during employment.
A return to duty exam may be required for an individual who is completing treatment and is ready to return to work after a serious illness or injury. Medical information in the form of return-to-work assessment is requested from the treating practitioner to ensure an individual can safely perform their job again, and they can return to work without risking re-injury.
Occupational Health provides access to travel health advice, immunizations and counselling to staff, postdocs and students travelling on KAUST business (e.g., conferences, research, or field trips).
Occupational Health will verify that both commercial and scientific divers have been declared by the examining licensed physician to be fit to engage in diving activities.
Clearance to return to diving must come from a physician trained in diving medicine and/or the recommended dive medicine specialist as chosen by Occupational Health following a medically cleared diver experiencing any conditions which may disqualify candidates from diving or following any major injury or illness, or any condition requiring chronic medication. All scientific diver medical examinations will be performed in accordance with the AAUS medical evaluation of fitness for scuba diving report.
The scientific divers medical exam must include all tests stipulated in the Dive Safety Manual and on the AAUS exam form (see link below). The final clearance signature must be from a licensed physician (M.D., or D.O.). It is recommended that the MD have training or knowledge of diving and hyperbaric medicine. A list of in Kingdom MD’s with this knowledge identified by Occupational Health is in the Diving Manual, Appendix 2b.
Divers may have their exam conducted by their personal physician if they prefer, so long as all KAUST Diving Medical Exam requirements are met, and all required tests are conducted and documentation provided. Final approval must be by a licensed physician (M.D. or D.O.). If contraindications to diving exist and the examining physician does not provide evidence of expertise in diving medicine, KAUST Occupational Health may require a secondary review and approval from a physician with such expertise.
Commercial diving medical examinations will be performed in accordance with the Association of Diving Contractors International (ADCI) and shall use ADCI Medical History/Physical Examination Forms.
Occupational Health will verify that snorkelers have completed a self-declared medical questionnaire to be fit to engage in snorkeling while working for KAUST. An Authorization to Snorkel Certificate at KAUST will be generated based on the required forms submitted by the snorkeler and follow up with your treating physician if indicated. If there is a preexisting condition that may affect your safety while snorkeling and you must seek the advice of your physician prior to engaging in snorkeling activities for KAUST.
