The primary purpose of health assessment fitness for work is to make sure that an individual is fit to perform the tasks involved effectively and without risk to their own or others’ health and safety.
It is not the intention to exclude a person from a job but to make any necessary reasonable modifications or adjustments to the job to allow the person to work efficiently and safely.
Health monitoring and surveillance are the processes of evaluating the health of worker(s) as it relates to their potential exposure in the workplace or lab to biohazardous agents, monitor the results of an exposure, and arranging for and monitoring post-exposure prophylaxis.
In an effort to identify and manage workplace hazards, any work-related exposures, illness and injuries must be reported. Employees must inform their supervisors of any work-related exposures, injuries or illnesses as soon as possible and report by end of the shift and report the incident via the SALUTE portal.
Follow up with Occupational Health will occur to ensure fitness to return to work after all exposure incidents.
Please contact the Occupational Health specialist post-treatment for further guidance.
Occupational Health will become involved in cases where an ill or injured individual requires support to access treatment and/or support for fitness for work. A staff member, supervisor or HR can initiate referrals for consultation with Occupational Health.
We know that there are certain settings where respiratory viruses are transmitted more easily. Being aware of different level of risks in these settings is important and it helps us determine the actions we need to choose to practice social responsibility and continue to be safe.
