Overview

Hot Work is defined as cutting, welding, soldering, and brazing operations for construction, demolition, maintenance, and repair activities that involve using portable gas or arc welding equipment. Using this equipment for cutting and welding can introduce significant fire hazards into KAUST facilities.

The Hot Work Permit requires a task specific risk assessment and method statement to be completed before work starts.

Hot Work hazards must be controlled by applying the Hierarchy of Controls:

The equipment, machinery, and processes around us use various energy to operate. There are multiple forms of energy, And Working with high-pressure systems follows the LOTO procedures in KAUST Such as:

01

Implement controls to avoid co-existence of flammable materials and ignition sources during hot work.

02

Select, inspect and maintain equipment to be used for Hot Work.

03

Eliminate ignition sources by selecting alternative work methods or equipment.

04

Establish and maintain procedures for special types of Hot Work, including:
  • Hot Work on lines or equipment that may still contain flammable materials;
  • Hot work in confined spaces.

05

Ensure that people who operate, inspect and maintain equipment to be used for Hot Work are competent.

06

Carry out work when the area is free of flammable materials or at a different place (outside of the area).
