Respiratory Illness Management

Overview

Communicable diseases, particularly respiratory illnesses like the common cold and flu, are known to spread easily from one person to another. The virus causing COVID-19 is known to spread through infectious respiratory particles and aerosols when a person who is infected breathes, talks, sings, shouts, coughs or sneezes.
We know that there are certain settings where respiratory viruses are transmitted more easily.

Being aware of different level of risks in these settings is important and it helps us determine the actions we need to choose to practice social responsibility and continue to be safe. By understanding and applying the lessons of the past few years and by using the 3Cs when appropriate, we can continue behave in a safe manner and continue to protect ourselves and our community.

What are the 3Cs?

The risk of exposure/transmission is elevated when the 3Cs overlap. By extending the 3Cs, or pushing them far apart, we increase our defenses from catching a respiratory illness.

Close Space

Where the room or space limits occupants’ ability to physically distance

Close communication

Where there is an active group discussion within close range (<1 m)

Crowds

Any gathering with multiple persons

The 3Cs video (coming soon) explains these situations as well as the public health guidelines that help us to be proactive and safe.
