Overview

Lab design is a multi-faceted challenge; it plays a huge part in the research process, combining elements of offices and research spaces; one of the main objectives is to promote efficient scientific work and safe operations.

Lab Design

HSE participates in project reviews with PDEC and facilities management for new laboratories and also reviews academic proposals to ASEPC ( Academic Space and Equipment Planning)

Some of the activities
conducted in this phase are:

  • Site Visits
  • Risk Assessments
  • Incorporating design standards
  • Pre-Operational Safety, Health & Environmental Review (POSHER) Design comments

Some of the activities conducted in this phase are:

Facility Modification

In the event of small modifications necessary for the laboratory (e.g., installation of electrical outlets, installation of new exhaust lines, installation of new facilities to support lab equipment a Facility Modification Request (LMR) needs to be initiated by the laboratory members with the approval of the Principal Investigator.

01

Facilities Management Project Request. the event of major lab modifications, the Principal Investigator needs to contact Academic Space and Equipment Planning (ASEPC).

02

Academic Space and Equipment Planning support the Senior Vice President, as Chair of the Academic Space and Equipment Planning Committee (ASEPC), in allocating space and equipment to the entire KAUST research community.

03

This work entails managing academic space with optimal utilization in support of students, faculty, and researchers to ensure that space needs for the university are fully met.

04

evaluating new equipment needs, equipment upgrades, and replacement of obsolete equipment; maintaining an extensive database on equipment utilization and criticality to avoid duplication of equipment across labs and centers.
