Program Overview

Overview

The Radiation Safety at KAUST is dedicated to facilitating research at KAUST through a comprehensive radiation safety program which promotes the health and safety of students, staff, and visitors. KAUST is authorized by the Nuclear and Radiological Regulatory Commission (NRRC), the competent body in Saudi Arabia to acquire, possess, and use radioactive materials and radiation producing equipment for education and research. KAUST University’s Institutional Radiation Safety Committee (IRSC) authorizes and oversees all possession and use of radiation at KAUST in accordance with NRRC regulations and University Radiation Safety Program policies and procedures. The Radiation Safety Officer assists the IRSC and radiation users by providing consultations, evaluations, and inspections which reduce or eliminate conditions which may lead to injury or loss of university radiation license.

A few of our responsibilities include:

Maintaining KAUST’s general radiation license for radioactive materials as well as the registration for radiation producing machines (X-rays).

Developing guidelines, standard operating procedures and best management practices for the safe and secure use of radioactive materials and radiation producing equipment.

Keeping KAUST research community’ exposures to ionizing radiation As Low As Reasonably Achievable (ALARA).

KAUST representation and intermediary to the national regulatory NRRC and professional organizations.

Provide specialized radiation safety training, perform compliance inspections, technical assistance to assess and communicate risks.

Investigating incidents and exposures.

Approving procurement of radiation sources, supervise shipping, transporting, and receiving of radioactive material.

Collecting and maintaining records of radioactive material inventory, exposures, radioactive waste, compliance, and audits, permits and incidents.

The Radiation Safety Officer together with the Institutional Radiation Safety committee (IRSC) manage the Radiation Safety Program outlining requirements for users of radioactive sources and providing guidance for their safe use.
